Diamond mining in South Africa is currently politically sustainable for the future. For instance currently in Angola, South Africa, there is a political act, which is trying to bring future sustainability to diamond mining. The country is trying to implement a new regulation for diamond production to prevent blood diamonds and to minimise the impact that diamond mining makes. Is politically sustainable for the future as it will be able to hopefully eliminate black market diamonds and illegal diamond mines where there are people working in terrible conditions. But currently the act has no full proof procedures for tracking the blood diamonds and no mechanisms for collating, analysing or publishing and data found on the trade of the blood diamonds. Although the act may be politically sustainable in the future, currently it is not doing very much. Some political officials in Angola say that, “They take the new policy and its responsibilities seriously and plans to tighten things up during implementation.” If the Angolan government follows through with this political act then in the future South Africa will change to be more sustainable. I therefore think that currently in South Africa the government is not fully sustainable with diamond mining, but they are on their way to becoming politically sustainable in the future.
Although the diamond mining industry has done a few things to politically help, there is still more things that they can do to further minimise the impacts of diamond mining in South Africa in the future. For instance I think that they can introduce many new regulations for the people and how much that they get paid. I think that this will improve political sustainability around mining the regulation will help many people to live a better life and afford their basic needs. I think that if the South African diamond industry implement this regulation then the impact of the diamond industry on the South African political environment would definitely be minimalised and be more sustainable for the future.
